Steve Vai Amp Settings & Guitar Tone
Featured Tone
Bad Horsie (1995)
Ibanez JEM (natural-finish ash body) → Bogner Ecstasy (early 100A or 100B)
Aggressive, wah-saturated high-gain lead tone with exceptional articulation from the DiMarzio Evolution bridge pickup into a cranked Bogner Ecstasy. The ash-body JEM provides a thicker tonal foundation than standard basswood JEMs. Heavy strings (.010-.052) in drop-C tuning deliver tight, muscular low-end despite extreme detuning. The modified Cry Baby wah gives the tone its signature vocal, expressive character — sweeping from thick, midrange honk to piercing treble bite. Multi-amp blending adds three-dimensional depth and harmonic complexity.
