Jim (Guitar World, Aug 2019): 'Reinhold Bogner brought it to me when we were recording that album and it's the only one like it. He kind of played around with the EQ section... it sounds like an Uberschall on steroids. He doesn't remember what he did.' First Slipknot album recorded using Pro Tools (prior albums on 2-inch tape). Produced by Rick Rubin, recorded/mixed by Greg Fidelman at The Mansion, LA.

NO primary source documents exact knob positions for either guitarist. Only directional guidance from Mick himself (MusicRadar): 'Vol. 3 was so much of a cleaner recording — I dropped the gain a bit, added more mids' vs. Iowa. Community estimates (e.g., MusicStrive) circulate but are NOT primary. Jim's custom Bogner is a unique, unreplicable amp — even Bogner cannot remember the modifications.

Custom octave fuzz (built by guitar tech Kevin Allen)
Octave Fuzz
1.Custom octave fuzz (built by guitar tech Kevin Allen)Mick confirmed: 'I use it at the beginning of Duality.' Tech described it as having 'a square wave filter on it so it sounds extra zippery and messed up.' Used specifically for the song intro.

Playing Technique

Aggressive downpicked/alternate-picked power chord patterns with heavy palm muting. Verses feature rapid-fire tremolo picking with melodic lines. Chorus: heavy chugging palm-muted riffs with open-string drones. Both guitarists play distinct, separated parts panned hard left and right. Mick's brighter cut contrasts with Jim's darker warmth.
