Original Gear

Guitar
Inferred: Japanese Fender Stratocaster copy or Squier JV/E-series Strat (c. 1982-1984); plausible alternatives include Ibanez Roadstar II RS-series, Aria Pro II TS-series, or a Hohner S-Series Strat-type (common affordable West German market options in 1984). No specific guitar named by the band.
Pickups
Inferred: stock single-coils in a Strat-style configuration (likely the factory pickups in a Japanese Fender/Squier or Ibanez Roadstar II). Not documented. (neck+middle)
Amplifier
Inferred: Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus (120W solid-state 2x12 combo) — most plausible given the characteristic stereo chorus swirl audible on the rhythm guitar; alternative candidates are a Roland JC-60/JC-77 or a Fender-style solid-state combo (Yamaha G-series, Peavey Bandit) with an external chorus pedal
Channel
Clean channel, Bright switch engaged, built-in chorus ON
Tuning
Standard E (E A D G B E), no capo — inferred from audio; chord voicings and open-string ring are consistent with standard tuning
Pickup Selector
neck+middle
Strings
Unknown

Recorded at the 'Löffel studio' — engineer 'Hase's' informal name for the rig he set up inside the band's Heikendorf practice bunker near Kiel, West Germany. Mixed by Hase. The longer Hawkeye Tonstudio (Ganderkesee) version was produced by Jeff Burke in November 1984, but the TMMS radio/Darius-cassette cut is the Heikendorf/Löffel session. No cabinet/speaker documentation; if the JC-120 inference is correct, two stock 12" Roland speakers.

No published settings exist; values estimated by ear to match the clean, bright, mid-forward jangle audible on the recording, assuming a Roland JC-120 with Bright switch on and built-in Chorus engaged (rate ~4, depth ~6). Gain is essentially zero — no audible overdrive.

Effects Chain

Inferred: either the Roland JC-120's built-in stereo chorus (most likely) OR a Boss CE-2 (the defining 1984 chorus pedal). Possibly supplemented by an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone or Ibanez CS-9.
chorus
Inferred: Boss DM-2 or Ibanez AD-9 analog delay (both readily available in West Germany, 1984)
analog delay
Inferred: outboard plate or spring reverb at the Löffel/Heikendorf rig, not a pedal

1.Inferred: either the Roland JC-120's built-in stereo chorus (most likely) OR a Boss CE-2 (the defining 1984 chorus pedal). Possibly supplemented by an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone or Ibanez CS-9.Central character of the guitar tone. The modulation is sine-smooth, not swept, so chorus rather than flanger.
2.Inferred: Boss DM-2 or Ibanez AD-9 analog delay (both readily available in West Germany, 1984)A short, single-repeat slap is faintly audible; not confirmed by band.
3.Inferred: outboard plate or spring reverb at the Löffel/Heikendorf rig, not a pedalReverb was standard practice at mix stage in 1984 radio demos; the wash on the guitar is too long and lush to be an amp spring. Could have been added by engineer Hase during mixdown rather than tracked wet.

Playing Technique

Steady 8th-note downstrokes with a plectrum; open-voiced first-position or partial-barre chords with ringing high strings; minimal palm muting; no bends or lead runs on guitar (the hook line is Hädrich's Yamaha DX7, not guitar). Gentle, even dynamics. Moderate tempo around 120 bpm in 4/4. Rhythm-only role behind the synth lead.
